CALL FOR PROPOSALS: POTENTIA magazine on gender, power and art.

[note: read the call for proposals on Facebook and join the event by clicking here!]

POTENTIA: a magazine that offers knowledge without pretense, to show what we find meaningful through art, activism, academics, and any other form of action.

Are you a scholar, artist or do you simply have an opinion about something? If you have the guts and potential to speak up about this, we want to hear from you. POTENTIA brings practice and theory together, plays with art and crashes head first into materialism, sexuality and power relations.

You have an opinion: now demonstrate in POTENTIA what you find meaningful and what connects you to the potential of life, theory and expression.

Magazine details:
The first issue of POTENTIA launches in March 2011 at the University of York (UK), followed by international distribution. We present academic knowledge and art reinvented: the grotesque and potential within society and everyday life, but inclusive and accessible for everybody. Full color and 96 pages of content that have you hooked from the start.

Confirmed contributors:
Academic staff from Utrecht University (NL), creative writing by writers from Wayne State University (MI, USA) and Agnes Scott College (GA, USA), scholars from the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht (NL), University of Manchester (UK), Uniwersytet Adama Mickiewicza (Poland), and artists from around the world.

Keywords:
identity, sexuality, communities, queer culture, power relations, gender, art, theory and practice, nomadism, materialism, literature, performativity, religious experience, design.

Deadline details:
Send your proposal for an essay, feature or visual design (max. 300 word outline) before January 20th 2011 to editor@potentiamagazine.com . We’ll review all proposals and will get back to you on January 22nd with details on your contribution to POTENTIA. We welcome everybody who wants to show their potential, whether you are a scholar, professor, photographer, designer, model, artist or someone who wants to voice their opinion.

Power is knowledge

What is POTENTIA? It is becoming, it is power, but most of all it’s about the potential – including YOURS – which we want to show while having a lot of fun. We’re in the early stages of developing POTENTIA magazine, which we will be presenting at the Feminist Cultural Activism event at York University in early March.

Coming from all different backgrounds, we think it’s time to do things differently. There is such a major disconnect between academia and theory, feminism and activism, philosophy and real life… and why? Let’s be self-critical: is there truly a need to use terms that have become so exclusive, placed high up in a white middle-to-higher-class academic tower?

To us, it’s rather simple. Basic communication knowledge.  Transmitter, message, receiver.

Feminism, listen to us. No matter how much you try to transmit your message, if you cannot formulate it in the proper words (and no, I’m sorry, but we do not mean Irigaray. We do not need a new language, we need to update our vocabulary), the receiver is never going to get it or want to listen to you. The same counts for other discourses: Don’t be pretentious, elitist or too normative. And lighten up. It’s time to have fun. It’s time to bring out the potential, simply by having a vision instead of opposition. No radical feminism, but radical optimism and getting out there in the real world.

Knowledge is power. But so is art, music, fashion, opportunities, dreaming, living and even failing. So the next three months are going to be one heck of a ride. Are you ready? We sure are!
